RECORDS
Hartlepool United Football Club is an English
football club based in Hartlepool. The club has played in League One since winning promotion in the 2006–07 season. The club was founded in 1908 as Hartlepools United Football Athletic Company. Hartlepool have played their home games since their foundation at Victoria Park, on Clarence Road, Hartlepool, known as one of England's coldest football grounds. In 1920, the Football League decided to form a third division. However this was based almost entirely in the south, as the new division was created by absorbing virtually the entire top division of the Southern League, with Grimsby Town the only northern representative. This was rectified the following season when a Third Division North was created with Hartlepools being one of the founder members. Brian Clough was invited to manage Hartlepool in 1965. His reaction was: "I don't fancy the place," but he took the job, anyway. The main local rival has historically been Darlington, but following that club's entrance into receivership, their main rival is now Carlisle United.
